Michael grew up in Britain. He joined the British Antarctic Survey in 1963 and livied in the the Antarctic for over two years. Michael moved to Canada, married Norma, and taught secondary school in central British Columbia. Now retired he writes, runs marathons and gardens. Thirty-nine years after leaving the Antarctic Michael returned in 2005. He lectured on Antarctic cruise ships as an Antarctic historian in 2006, 2007 and 2009.
